KEAN DISSOLVES BIOLOGY DEPARTMENT

This is an URGENT message to all 800 of Kean's BIOLOGY MAJORS:

Kean University is dissolving the Biology Department—This means that, just like the students in the Philosophy and Social Work Majors, you are going to have to switch your program of study!

Talk to your professors!

(More to come soon...)

  2. That's horrible! What explanation did the Administration provide?

  3. So far they haven't given one at all, though it's apparently part of the plan to 'restructure' the Sciences at Kean since the completion of the new STEM building.

We're still looking into the situation—once we make sense of it we'll post more.

If you don't want to wait, look up Dr. Boehm—he's got more details than us. We plan on doing the same soon, but our hands are full with our petition for the moment.

  6. I know this seems too insane to be true—that's why we're trying to get as much info as we can before we do a full article on it—but the same thing happened to Social Work and Philosophy.

Majors still enrolled in those programs were told they would be given ample opportunity to complete their studies before the actual course listings in their programs of study disappeared, but it didn't actually happen that way. If you visit KeanWise, for instance, and do a registration search for Social Work you will find that there are only seven different undergrad courses offered this semester, and six for the fall: Students who only need classes offered in those lists will be okay, but anyone who still needs a 1000, 2000 or 3000 level course is basically out of luck.

As far as Philosophy goes, there are still plenty of offerings, but those classes are not in-line with the Major guide-sheet, and we've been told there is no plan to offer a Senior Seminar ever again. At a glance, the situation looks okay but under scrutiny, it becomes apparent that lots of students have been left hanging.

So this means that Bio majors are facing a difficult decision: Either you'll trust that the Administration will continue to offer the courses YOU need to graduate , or you go to another school or another major.

Seniors enrolled full-time will be okay, most likely. For Juniors, it's a shot in the dark. Underclassmen, start talking to your advisors about the best way to transfer your credits to satisfy the requirements of a different program. If nothing else, you'll be prepared for this wave of the shit-storm.

  7. this is not entirely true.....i spoke to my advisor seeing as i am a biology major and he informed me that while the department has been dissolved the majors have not. The majors have simply been split and moved into different colleges which will oversee them.

  8. That's good news—it means you guys should fare better than the majors in other departments that have disappeared.

But don't get too comfortable... The administration has failed to keep its word before in these sorts of matters; it's better to be prepared and not need it than vice versa: The real problem isn't whether or not declared Majors will see their guidesheets change, but if Kean will offer a diverse enough selection of courses for you to complete your degree in a similar amount of time, or ever. If you have any more details from that talk with your advisor that you feel are worthwhile, please shoot us an email at Takebackkean@gmail.com.

Otherwise, we're putting up the rest of our information sometime tomorrow.

  9. what you guys are saying is completly true....i like the person above was concerned with what i heard and went to my advisor about what was going on...i was given the same news and pacified by it let it all go not thinking about it again...that is not until a few days ago when i started to prepare to schedule classes and realized that it is next to impossible to get all of my classes that i need and have a reasonable schedule. once of the classes i need there are only 5 classes all taught on the same two days by the same teacher! how is someone supposed to make something like that work! kean has no regard for their students and what they need!

  10. If you think it's bad now, wait to see what it'll look like in a year when they don't care about placating Bio students anymore.

  11. The actions being done by the Farahi Administartion are truly unprecedented. What can we students do to right the wrongs taking place in KEAN. A lot of us don't have time to attend the meetings but we would like to help some way.

  12. First off, there's the NJ Day of Action, coming up on April 13, 2011, and we've also heard some talk about a walkout. As always, we'll let you know what's going on and how you can be a part of it.

PS- Don't forget to vote in the Student Org elections next month!
